Portland, Maine – Baker Newman Noyes (BNN), a nationally recognized top 100 accounting and advisory firm, has announced that John Hurley, MBA, has joined the firm as BNN’s chief people officer. As CPO, Hurley oversees the firm’s People Team, including recruiting, talent development and people operations and provides leadership across the firm as a member of the Management Committee.

Hurley, who brings more than 20 years’ experience to the role, will support the firm’s mission through innovative recruiting strategies and integrated talent management techniques while focusing on an enhanced employee experience. His expertise includes organizational development; change leadership; supporting mergers, acquisitions, and integrations; and delivering high-impact human capital strategies.

Prior to joining BNN, Hurley served as the senior director of human resources and employee relations at an educational software company outside of Boston. Over the course of his career as a HR leader, he developed comprehensive talent strategies and established an employee relations function to ensure high levels of employee engagement and implemented exceptional standards of fairness, empowerment, meritocracy, and accountability.

“BNN’s culture, team of specialized and knowledgeable professionals, and reputation for top-tier client service make the firm a great place to work,” said Hurley. “Over the past few years, the firm has made innovations in their recruiting and retention strategies to best meet the needs of its people and the market. We know this is an ongoing effort and are excited for what’s next. A critical component of the people function is viewing our employees as our customers, and helping our staff build relationships within the firm and with our clients.”

“John brings a wealth of knowledge, experience, creativity, and demonstrated success that will enhance BNN’s overall human resources strategy,” said BNN Managing Principal Dayton Benway. “Working alongside the rest of our People Team, he will build on our people-first approach, and provide a meaningful combination of new policies for attracting, developing, and retaining talent, along with flexibility and a personal touch, to support our employees as they serve our clients.”

Hurley’s hiring accompanies three other senior People Team hires this year: Kate Lawler, director of people operations and systems; Carol Pacheco, people operations manager; and Shelli Smith, senior talent acquisition specialist.

Hurley is based in the firm’s Portland, Maine office and will work with the rest of the BNN recruiting, talent development, and people operations teams to support BNN in developing and executing strategies that support the firm’s overall growth, mission, and strategic plans for the coming years.
