To the Editor:

I am thrilled Erin Gaffen has announced her candidacy for School Committee and I’d like you to consider voting for her on March 3. I have known Erin for many years, starting as preschool parents when our current eighth graders attended Sawyer Nursery School, we then worked closely as Joshua Eaton School Council members and most recently as Yes for Reading volunteers. I can say with certainty that she is respectful, passionate, thoughtful, articulate and always willing to listen in order to gain greater understanding.

Erin’s passion for public education is evident. In addition to serving on School Council and as Co-Chair of Yes for Reading she has always been actively involved in the education of her three sons; filling various roles for PTO as needed, volunteering in the Joshua Eaton library and classrooms, and also as a Lego League Coach. Prior to starting her family, Erin worked as a special educator which will provide unique perspective when examining the many decisions the School Committee is asked to consider. Classroom experience is not a requirement for School Committee, but it is valuable when discussing initiatives that directly impact our teachers and students. Erin also served as a Budget Parent for two years. This commitment involves attending lengthy and detailed budget meetings, giving her an in-depth knowledge of how our tax dollars are spent and why. Few residents have this level of understanding when it comes to the budget and it is another area of strength for serving the town in this capacity.

I have every confidence that Erin will be an asset to our School Committee. Her experience and skills will go far in giving our teachers and students the best we have to offer as a town, and I hope you will join me in supporting her on March 3.
