Mirogiannis posts goal and assist as Lions grab two goal lead in opening 6:39
BOSTON, MA – Emerson College opened a three-match week at home with two goals in the opening 6:39 to secure a 2-0 victory over Westfield State University in a non-conference men’s soccer matchup at Rotch Field tonight.

Sophomore Nick Mirogiannis (Reading, Massachusetts/Reading Memorial) had a hand in both Emerson goals, which were scored just 2:07 apart to provide all the offense it needed with a goal and assist. Sophomore Carlo Carson (Brooklyn, New York/Poly Prep) also netted a goal for the Lions, while first year Lasse Bartsch-Erforth (San Diego, California/Pacific Ridge) recorded his second shutout of the season with five saves.
Junior Marko Kononenko (Kyiv, Ukraine) finished with seven stops in goal for Westfield State.
Emerson grabbed control in the opening minutes of the match, scoring both goals within a two-minute span. Carson opened the scoring just 4:32 into the contest with his second of the season with a near post header off a deep throw on the right sideline by Mirogiannis.
Emerson doubled the lead just two minutes later as Westfield State turned the ball over at the top of the 18. Junior Jack Wasserman (Atlanta, Georgia/The Galloway School) intercepted a Westfield pass deep in the defensive end and then squared a pass across the top of the penalty area to Mirogiannis who turned and slotted his third goal of the season into the left side of the goal in the seventh minute.
Emerson (5-3-1, 0-1-0 NEWMAC) is right back in action tomorrow night when it hosts Lasell University for the second of a three-match week at Rotch Field at 7 p.m. Westfield State (0-10-0, 0-3-0 MASCAC) hosts Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Saturday at noon.
