The Rockets scored a 91-65 victory in their first meet of the season
Reading, MA — The Reading Memorial High School girls swimming team opened its 2026 season with a 91-65 victory over Stoneham/Melrose on Friday, September 18, at the Burbank YMCA.
The Rockets had several strong individual and relay performances, including multiple first- and second-place finishes.
Senior captain Laila Paulsen, Reese Paulsen, Gabbie Hames and Erin Cashin opened the meet by taking first place in the 200 Medley Relay. Paulsen also won the 200 Individual Medley, while sophomore Ellie Walker finished second.
Freshman Michaela Cohoon and eighth-grader Bea Dribin placed first and second, respectively, in the 200 Freestyle. Cohoon later won the 500 Freestyle, with freshman Maggie Sisson finishing second.
In the 100 Butterfly, sophomore Paige Sullivan, eighth-grader Ella Kaloyanides and senior captain Gabbie Hames swept the top three places. Reese Paulsen and junior Erin Cashin finished first and second in the 100 Freestyle, while Walker won the 100 Backstroke.
Reading also earned first place in the 200 Freestyle Relay with Laila Paulsen, Hames, Maddie Melanson and Reese Paulsen. The Rockets closed out the meet with a first-place finish in the 400 Freestyle Relay by Reese Paul, Melanson, Cashin and Laila Paulsen.
According to RMHS Swim Coach Kate Werner, many swimmers recorded times that qualified them for Sectionals and States. The meet also featured several swimmers competing in their first-ever swim race.
The team highlighted the contributions of its new eighth- and ninth-graders, noting that they are expected to play an important role in the team’s success this season.
The Rockets will return to competition Tuesday, September 22, when they travel to face Arlington High School.
