Obituary: Fredrick “Fred” Altieri, 71

May 30, 1951 ~ October 1, 2022

Fredrick “Fred” Altieri, age 71, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Reading on October 1, 2022.  He was the beloved husband of Phyllis (Picardo) Altieri, with whom he had shared 47 wonderful years of marriage.

Born in Winthrop, MA, on May 30, 1951, he was a son of the late Ferdinand and Edith (Glorioso) Altieri. Son-in-law of the late Mario Picardo. Fred grew up in East Boston, and graduated from Boston Latin School and Lowell Tech (Umass Lowell). He then went on to earn his MBA from Boston University. Fred’s love for music was deeply rooted; he studied classical piano at the Berklee School of Music, and in his 40s, he returned to Berklee to master jazz piano, a passion that lasted for the rest of his life.

Fred lived life to the fullest. In addition to the piano, he was an avid skier, an everyday tennis player, an excellent chef, and maintained a flower and vegetable garden that was closer to a farm than a hobby.  Fred loved the Red Sox and was a season ticket holder for many years, he enjoyed booing them when they deserved it almost as much as he enjoyed rooting them on during a winning streak.

Fred was a chemical engineer by training and was a consultative sales rep and VP of Sales with a number of companies in the chemical industry throughout his career. He took pride in meeting the complex needs of his customers and many of them as well as co-workers became life-long friends. The job always required travel and Fred was familiar with and would give you his opinions on anywhere from the backwoods of Canada to which dumpling shop you should visit if you ever found yourself in Beijing.

Later in life, Fred continued his passion for travel and among many other adventures, he hiked the Great Ocean Road in Australia, toured Istanbul and swam in the Adriatic off the coast of Puglia, jumping off the same dock his grandfather had done when he was a boy.

Fred loved getting the whole family together. The backyard was the scene of many birthday parties and summer holidays but he always took the time to invest in one on one time with each of his children and he will live on through them. He loved being Papa and his grandchildren were the highlight of his life in the last few years.

Along with his adoring wife, Fred is survived by his three children, Steven Altieri and his wife Kristin of Georgetown, Diana (Altieri) Dickinson and her husband Marc of Rockland, and Christina (Altieri) Hubbard and her husband Timothy of Rockland; his six grandchildren, Benjamin, Liam, Aliana, Kaia, Cora, and Kellan; his siblings, Frank Altieri and his wife Joanne of N. Andover, and Carol D’Agosta and her husband Anthony of Rowley;  his mother-in-law, Frances Picardo; his two sisters-in-law, Maria Climaco and her husband Renato, and Julie Bonetti and her husband Michael; his three nieces, Lori, Maria, and Julie, as well as many other dear nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
