State Police Investigating Fatal Overnight Crash in Reading

Reading, MA — At 1:02 AM Thursday morning, Massachusetts State Police units responded to a crash involving a box truck and a pickup truck on Interstate 93 North in Reading, in the area of the Commerce Way ramp. The operator of the pickup suffered fatal injuries in the crash.

Preliminary investigation indicates that, for reasons still under investigation, the pickup, a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado, was apparently stopped in the right lane when it was rear-ended by a northbound 2022 International MV607 box truck registered out of New Hampshire. The box truck pushed the Silverado into the adjacent acceleration lane for the ramp.

The operator of the Silverado, Michael Murphy, 41, of Tewksbury, was determined to be deceased on scene. The operator of the box truck, a 51-year-old Wilder, Vermont man, was not injured.

The investigation into the facts and circumstances of the crash is ongoing and is being conducted by the State Police-Andover Barracks, the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, the State Police Crime Scene Services Section, and the State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section.

The two rightmost lanes at the crash site were closed for three hours to accommodate the emergency response and the investigation.
