10 Years Ago – 2013

  • Reading Rotary to host “Taste of Metro North” event at RMHS featuring local restaurants. 1/22/2013
  • Selectmen Incumbents Steve Goldy and Rick Schubert will not seek re-election. Dan Ensminger, Mark Jackson, and Marsie West have pulled nomination papers for two seats for Selectmen. 1/24/2013
  • A Special Town Meeting on Monday, January 25, 2013, will discuss the library building renovation project estimated to cost $14.5 million. 1/25/2013

15 Years Ago – 2008

  • CPDC approves site plan and signage for the relocation of Comically Speaking to the Reading VFW Hall.   1/21/2008
  • Reading School Committee received a gift of a 45-star American Flag from the town’s Veteran’s Officer Frank Driscoll. The flag originally belonged to the class of 1904.   1/22/2008
  • Danis Properties announces that Market Basket grocery store is set to open in spring of 2008 at its 128 retail center on Walkers Brook Drive.   1/23/2008
  • Reading Recreation announces that local skating rinks at public parks are now open.   1/23/2008

25 Years Ago – 1998

  • Reconstruction on the Mineral Street Bridge to start soon. The former wooden bridge was closed many years ago to vehicles and is currently only open to pedestrians. The new bridge will be higher than the old bridge by several feet.   1/20/1998 
  • Design for the new 19,000-square-foot Police Station on Union Street has been endorsed by the Board of Selectmen. The project is estimated to cost $4.2 million and will appear on the warrant for a special town meeting in March.   1/21/1998
  • Barnes & Noble Bookstore in Burlington will host a night of poetry reading by students from Parker Middle School.   1/22/1998
  • Eastern Bank opened a new branch in Atlantic Food Mart on Haven Street, offering banking convenience to shoppers.   1/23/1998 

50 Years Ago – 1973 

  • Seven residents have pulled nomination papers for two seats on the Board of Public Works. Former BPW member Lawrence W. Leonard, proprietor of a detective agency, Francis J. Roce, and General Electric project engineer John H. Russell announced their candidacies this week.   1/25/1973
  • A two-alarm fire on Vine Street injures a mother and three children. Mother and children were treated for smoke inhalation. One child leaped from the second-floor window into her grandfather’s arms. The house was a total loss.   1/25/1973
  • A 20-year-old motorist assaulted a 15-year-old Auburn Street boy for allegedly throwing snowballs at his car. The boy suffered head and scalp injuries and is currently recovering at Winchester Hospital. Police Chief Beaudoin will seek criminal charges for the motorist.   1/25/1973
  • The Reading Jaycees have postponed their hot chocolate giveaway at the Town’s ice skating areas due to mild weather.   1/25/1973

75 Years Ago – 1948

  • School Superintendent Dr. Elbridge C. Crover announced his resignation effective August 31, 1948. After nine years of service in Reading, Dr. Grover will work in a different field of education.   1/22/1948
  • The Capital Expenditures Planning Committee has released its fourth annual report. The report notes the need for a new elementary school and recommends the town establish a reserve fund.   1/22/1948
  • An avalanche of snow and ice fell from the roof of the Lyceum Hall Block on Ash Street, damaging two autos and endangering one pedestrian.   1/22/1948
  • The Selectmen signed the license for the Reading Theater and the amusement license for the Lam’s Club event on February 1, 1948.   1/22/1948
  • Fire Chief Eames requests residents dig out fire hydrants in the vicinity of homes and businesses for safety.   1/22/1948

100 Years Ago – 1923

  • E.E. Nicolas & Company will start ice harvesting at Quannapowitt today.   1/26/1923
  • Two citizens “ordinally of good standing went prone with a thud” yesterday in Reading Square. Small pieces of cork had been spread on the ice to make it safe.   1/26/1923
  • Old South Church’s special musical service this Sunday evening will feature vocal numbers by the chorus, an organ recital, and two violin numbers.   1/26/1923
  • Troop 4 of the Boy Scouts held their meeting at the Congregational Church. Scouts were drilled in marching.   1/26/1923
  • Knights of Pythias Reading Lodge 91 will hold a convention Monday evening. New bylaws are to be acted upon.   1/26/1923
