Town Faces Civil Suit Related to Officer-Involved Shooting

Reading, MA — Select Board Chair Mark Dockser and Vice-Chair Anne Landry report that a federal civil suit has been filed against the Town and two individual police officers by the family of Alan Greenough arising out of the use of deadly force by Reading police officer Erik Drauschke on February 3, 2018.

This incident was investigated by the Middlesex District Attorney’s office, who requested that a judicial inquest be conducted. Subsequently, the case was presented to a grand jury and the officer was charged with manslaughter. The officer has been on unpaid leave since his indictment charged on September 23, 2020. That case is proceeding in the Superior Court.

The Town is being represented in the civil case by Attorney Leonard Kesten, who was appointed by the Town’s insurer, the Massachusetts Interlocal Insurance Association (MIIA).

The Select Board will be provided legal updates in executive session and will keep the community apprised where and when it can.
