Obituary: John Nicholas Mitropoulos, 92

November 23, 1928 ~ June 21, 2021

John Nicholas Mitropoulos, 92, of Reading, beloved husband of 65 years to Venetia (Stavrinos) Mitropoulos, passed away on Monday, June 21, 2021, at his home with his family at his side.  Born in Cambridge, he is the loving son of the late Nicholas and Margaritta (Sgouros) Mitropoulos.

John grew up in Cambridge and was a graduate of Rindge High School.  He served his country proudly in the United States Air Force during the Korean War and was stationed in Japan.  John married the love of his life, Venetia, in 1956.  He then attended Boston University on the G.I. Bill and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Aeronautical Engineering.  John and Venetia lived in Somerville and then moved to Reading to raise their family.  John worked as an engineer, starting at AVCO in Wilmington, then as the assistant town engineer in Reading.  Following that, he became the town engineer in North Reading and he later retired from the engineering firm, SSG, at the age of 81.  John was an avid golfer and lover of all sports.  He was an active parishioner at the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary Church in Woburn and a member of the AHEPA.  Family was of the utmost importance in John’s life.  He never missed any of his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events and recitals.  John was a loving and devoted husband and father and a cherished grandfather.  He will be missed by his loving family and many friends.

John was the beloved husband of Venetia (Stavrinos) Mitropoulos and devoted Father of Theophilos John Mitropoulos and his wife Linda (Banacos) of Reading, Nicholas J. Mitropoulos and his wife Maureen (McBride) of North Reading, Margaritta C. “Marney” Grimes and her husband David of Winchester and the late Asemo Mitropoulos.  He was also the cherished grandfather of John Theo Mitropoulos, Arianna Sophia Mitropoulos, Alexander N. Mitropoulos, Timothy N. Mitropoulos, James David Grimes, Venetia Yanna Grimes and the late Christopher N. Mitropoulos.  He was the loving brother of the late Theodore Mitropoulos, Christy Mitropoulos, Sophia Mitropoulos, Charlie Mitropoulos, Helen Fermanis and the beloved son-in-law of the late Asemo and Theophilos Stavrinos.  He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. 

Family and friends are cordially invited to attend calling hours in the Funeral Home, 335 Park Street, North Reading on Monday, June 28th, 2021 from 4 to 8pm.  

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, June 29th, 2021 at the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church, 70 Montvale Ave, Woburn at 11am.  

Interment will follow at Charles Lawn Cemetery in Reading.
