Budget makes record investment in local aid for cities and towns
BOSTON – Representative Richard M. Haggerty (D-Woburn) recently joined his colleagues in the Massachusetts House of Representatives in passing the Fiscal Year 2027 (FY27) House budget, notably a 4.91% increase in local education funding.
The House also recently passed a supplemental budget in which Representative Haggerty helped secure $100,000 in direct funding to Reading Public Schools for materials, equipment and capital improvements and $25,000 to the Town of Reading to support the purchase of a van for local shuttle service.
The FY27 House budget funds Unrestricted General Government Aid (UGGA) for the Town of Reading at over $4.2 million and Chapter 70 education funding at over $12.9 million. The education funding delivered by the Commonwealth to the Town of Reading represents a 4.91% increase in the FY27 budget.
“Increased education funding for Reading in this budget is a win for our entire community as we work to give our teachers and students the tools they need to succeed,” said Representative Haggerty. “The local aid funding ensures our towns and cities can continue to provide important public safety initiatives and municipal services that our residents have come to rely on each and every day.”
The budget also directs $1.5 million to the Alliance of Massachusetts YMCAs, of which the Burbank YMCA of Reading will directly benefit.
