Obituary: Burton J. Synnott, 81

September 1, 1942 – March 24, 2024

Burton J. Synnott, a resident of Reading for 48 years, passed away on March 24, 2024 at the Bear Hill Nursing Center in Stoneham. He was 81 years of age. Burton was born in New York, NY on September 1, 1942 the son of the late Burton and Anita (Rappe) Synnott.

Burton attended Amherst College from 1959 to 1963, earning a B.A. in English with honors, Columbia University from 1963 to 1966, earning a M.A. in English Literature, and Babson College, earning a M.B.A in 1989. Burton served as secretary of his class at Amherst College from 1963 to 1982.

He worked in manufacturing for several Massachusetts companies for nearly forty years, including at Cabot Stains during the 1980s and 1990s and at Riverdale Mills during the 2000s. While at Cabot’s, he was active in the National Paint & Coatings Association in Washington, serving as its Transportation & Distribution Committee chairman in the late 1990’s.

He served in the Army with active duty from 1965 to 1968 mainly in Germany and rose to a E-5 Specialist.

He was a devoted and voracious reader, especially of British and Irish literature, a collector of stamps and coins, a baseball, soccer, and football fan, a trivia buff, and enjoyed listening to classical music. He was also a devoted Boy Scout parent.

Burton was the beloved husband of the late Cheryl Lynn (Cameron) Synnott of Reading and a dear friend of the late Margaret Grogan of Reading. Devoted father of David C. Synnott of Reading and cherished brother of Grace Anderson of Addison, ME.

Burton’s funeral services and burial for are private and there are no visiting hours.
