Man Charged in Connection with Fatal Assault on his Reading Mother

Lowell, MA – Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Lowell Police Superintendent Greg Hudon have confirmed that early Monday morning, Lowell Police officers responded to a residence on Middlesex Street for a 911 call reporting a woman beaten up and barely breathing. Upon arrival, police located the victim, Elena Vainer, 51, of Reading, deceased inside the home with obvious bruising to her face and other apparent trauma.

The preliminary investigation suggests that the victim had been in Lowell visiting her son Michael Belous, 23, at his Middlesex Street condominium over the weekend. At some point during the visit, a physical altercation occurred that allegedly resulted in the victim being severely beaten and suffering multiple injuries to her head and neck. Mr. Belous was placed under arrest on the morning of July 17, and charged with assault and battery on a household or family member, assault and battery causing serious bodily injury.

Michael Belous will be arraigned in Lowell District Court.

This is an open and ongoing investigation being conducted by the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, Massachusetts State Police Detectives assigned to the District Attorney’s Office, and the Lowell Police Department. This case has been referred to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner who will determine cause and manner of death. Additional charges are possible.
