Listen to this articleReading, MA — After being nominated for the role by member Chuck Robinson, the School Committee voted 6-0 on June 22 to appoint Thomas Wise as chair for the coming year. Sarah McLaughlin also nominated the current chair, Shawn Brant, to continue as chair. Wise and Brandt indicated that they would accept the position if elected but would not be upset if the other was chosen. Member Erin Gaffen noted that it was a difficult choice as she believed both had done well in the role. Member Carla Nazzaro agreed, “I have been happy with how the committee has run for the past two years . . . we have all been working together to do what is best for the district.”
After continued discussion, Brandt stepped aside, and the vote for Wise was unanimous. Wise, taking the gavel, opened nominations for vice-chair. Brandt nominated Gaffen, who was elected without discussion by a vote of 6-0.
Wise and Gaffen will serve in their positions until the subsequent School Committee reorganization in July 2024.
