Obituary: Richard Francis Hoyle, 89

Richard Francis Hoyle, loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on the fifth of October, just days after his 89th birthday. Dick, as he was known to his friends, was ever gregarious, never hesitating to reach out his hand to meet someone new or help someone in need. He was an engineer by training and could always be found tinkering on some project at the family camp on Wilson Lake in Acton, ME, or at one of his many residences in MA, NH, and FL over the years. With the family camp came lifelong friendships, including the Cook Family, Don, Emily, Eric, and Ann, and the Lee-Flayhan family. Summers spent on the lake were the best of times for all involved. Dick probably taught hundreds of people to water ski, sail, and play cribbage and no stunt was too far-fetched to pull off with his partner in crime, Don Cook.

Richard was born to Catherine and Francis Hoyle in Lowell, MA, and was raised in Chelmsford, where he was a three-sport athlete and captain of the football team. In 1956 he graduated from Lowell Tech with an engineering degree. After a brief stint in upstate NY, he took a job with A.W. Chesterton in 1957 and moved to Reading MA.

He worked his entire career at Chesterton, retiring as CEO in 2008. He continued to consult for them until he was well into his eighties.

He loved all of his nine children, but the love of his life was his wife of forty-four years, Sandie (Devanna). Together they traveled the world and made countless friends along the way. After 14 years in Florida, they returned along with their dog Benson to Merrimac to be closer to family. Dick leaves his nine children. Cathy Toomey and partner Paul Gagliardi, Sue Deorocki and husband Ron, Terri Doerfler and husband Mike, Linda Golden and husband Peter, James Hoyle, Cindy Hoyle and husband Bert Cushman, David and wife Jo Lamphier, Kevin and wife Lisa Lamphier and Brian and wife Daina Lamphier. He also leaves 19 grandchildren. Sean, Colleen (Jonny), Jackie, Cecilly (Scott), Allyssa (Pete),Liz (Luke), Daniel (Danielle), Michael (Jill), David, Camille, Sumner, Claire, DJ, Chris, Troiyanna, Alex (Haley), Jensen, Emily and Greta. He leaves eight great-grandchildren. Hannah, Colin, Chloe, Jason, Linnea, Eamon, Auggie and Elliot. He also leaves his brother Randall Hoyle and wife Tobi, sister-in-law Marian and the mother of six of his children, Jackie Storti. He was predeceased by his brother Robert Hoyle.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday, November 5, 2022, at 11 A.M. at Blue Ocean. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Jimmy Fund as Dick battled cancer and loved his Red Sox. Arrangements by the E.V. Jutras & Sons Funeral Home in Amesbury.
