Obituary: Donald C. Monson, 94

December 19, 1926 – July 08, 2021

It is with great sadness that the David Monson family reports the passing of Donald C. Monson on Thursday, July 8, 2021, at the age of 94. Donald was born on December 19, 1926, at Choate hospital and was raised in Stoneham, MA.

Later he was a long-term resident of Reading, MA with his beloved wife Joan. Donald served in the US Navy from 1944 to 1946 and was part of the crew on the USS Cullman, APA78 serving in the Pacific. After his Honorable Discharge from the Navy, he obtained his Bachelor’s Degree at UMass. He was a trust tax officer at the Bank of New England for his career during which time he was a Summer Ave resident of Reading. Donald and Joan were active members of the Old South Methodist Church. After Joan’s passing in 2014, Donald moved to Haverhill Crossing Assisted Living in Haverhill, MA, where he lived out his days close to his son, David, and family. The Monson family had deep ties to the community of Wolfeboro, NH where his parents, Nils and Emma Monson retired. He had his own place in Wolfeboro and spent many rewarding days up on “the farm”. One of his favorite trips 2 years ago was up to Wolfeboro where he got to visit with the new owners and walk through the old house and barn again.

He is survived by his only child, David, and David’s wife and children who live in Haverhill.

Donald’s ashes will be interned by his wife’s in the VA Cemetery in Agawam, MA. The immediate family is going to have private time with them at the cemetery and there are no scheduled calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Don’s memory to the Old South United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 6 Salem St., Reading, MA 01867.

In Donald’s Bible from the Navy he had Matthew 11:28 marked out, “Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
