Obituary: Helen P. Koulouris, 97

May 02, 1923 – May 14, 2020

Helen (Kiamos) Koulouris, 97, a long-time resident of Reading and loving wife of the late William (Bill) Koulouris, passed away peacefully in her home of 65years on Thursday, May 14, 2020, surrounded by her family.

Helen was born on May 2, 1923, in Bristol Connecticut, the youngest daughter of Peter and Mary Kiamos. She grew up in Connecticut surrounded by her four sisters, who she loved dearly until she met Bill and moved to Reading in 1955 where they raised their three children, Dean, Diane, and David. Bill predeceased her in 1995, and over the last 25 years, she has continued to enjoy her life surrounded by family and friends.

She was an avid reader, sometimes juggling multiple books at once and when her eyesight failed her she continued to enjoy books on tape provided by The Perkins School for the Blind and her dear friend and neighbor, Maryellen O’Neill. Always the extrovert she looked forward to her weekly candlepin bowling league, lunch with the ladies at Christopher’s, visiting Coiffeurs by Anthony where her longtime friend Venetia Mitropoulosnot only washed and set her hair, but kept her update on all the happenings in Reading and within the Greek community. She was an active member of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary, in Woburn, and although unable to attend services regularly she looked forward to attending the St. Nicholas fair and summer festivals. She also enjoyed tending to her many plants and flowers rejuvenating even the most hopeless ones, watching golf (always rooting for Fred Couples), frequent trips to Kohl’s, and the Ninety-Nine. When asked the secret to her longevity she was quick to respond with blackberry brandy, peanut M&Ms, and Klondike Bars.

Helen was predeceased by her sisters Mary Pappas and Jane Cari of Bristol, CT, and Evangeline Mirageas of Needham, MA. She is survived by her three children, Dean Koulouris and his wife Jeannette of Reading, Diane Monaco of Woburn, David Koulouris of Andover, and beloved grandchildren, Alysia, Lindsey, Jillian, Matthew, James, Connor, and Lauren.
