Middlesex DA & Reading Chief Statement Regarding Officer-Involved Shooting

Reading, MA — The Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office and Reading Police are currently investigating the officer-involved shooting that occurred on Saturday, February 3, 2018.

The man involved in the fatal officer-involved shooting has been identified as Alan Greenough, 43 of Reading. As is the Reading Police Department Policy the officer was immediately placed on paid Administrative Leave following the incident pending the results of the investigation.

This remains an open and active investigation being conducted by the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office and Reading Police. A full report will be released at the conclusion of the investigation.

The District Attorney’s Office, by statute, has the duty and authority to direct and control all death investigations within Middlesex County. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting will include gathering and reviewing witness statements, police reports, radio transmissions, autopsy reports, ballistics tests and all other available information to determine if any person bears criminal responsibility in connection with the death of Alan Greenough.

A full report will be made available to the public at the conclusion of the investigation. The Reading Police Department will also conduct an administrative review of this matter per department policy.
