First-Ever Pumpkin Smash

Residents Invited to Smash Pumpkins, Enjoy Fall Activities and Turn Halloween Waste Into Valuable Compost at Reading Memorial High School

Reading, MA — Don’t trash it…Smash it! Save your pumpkins and save the date for Reading’s first PUMPKIN SMASH: Saturday, November 7, 9 a.m. – noon, at Reading Memorial High School (Performing Arts Center parking lot).

Aim your pumpkin at targets on Black Earth Compost’s Carnival Truck…or at the spike wall and hoop in Reading DPW’s backhoe!

All pumpkins will go to Black Earth’s facility in Manchester-by-the-Sea and get composted into “black gold”—used to nourish the soil and grow healthy food.

Just remove all paint, glitter, and candles from your pumpkins and bring them along.

Wonder how much you’ve diverted from Reading’s trash stream to become valuable compost? Volunteers will weigh your pumpkin and let you know.

Have fun while doing good! Visit the Pumpkin Smash:

  • Pumpkin-themed bake sale
  • Face painting

  • Coastal Coffee Nitro Cold Brew cart
  • Free composting tips raffle
  • Information table (Why compost? What can you compost? Home & curbside food-waste-composting bins on display)

The Pumpkin Smash is brought to you by Reading Composts! and the Town of Reading. Reading Composts! is a six-year-old local volunteer group that encourages Reading residents to compost their food waste and promotes the benefits of composting.

See you at the Smash!
