Obituary: Stephen E. Smith, 58

Mr. Stephen E. Smith, 58, of Medford, passed away on Monday, April 28, with his husband by his side. The son of Richard and Ernestine (Rodway) Smith, he was born in Winchester on January 1, 1967, and had been an area resident all his life. Stephen attended Medford Public Elementary and Middle Schools, Austin Preparatory High School in Reading, MA, Boston Conservatory studying Instrumental Music, and UMass Amherst for Music Education. His love of music was shown in his participation in many great organizations.

Steve was a member of the Medford High School Marching Band, playing the Sousaphone. Stephen was also a member of the Greater Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra, where he played the Bassoon. He was also a choral singer with the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus, the Providence Gay Men’s Chorus, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra/Tanglewood Festival Chorus. He also participated in many other small local ensembles as a Singer, Instrumentalist, and Actor. As a Career waiter, Steve was employed at many local restaurants, including The Hilltop Steakhouse in Saugus, MA, The Cheesecake Factory in both Boston & Burlington, MA, and Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse in Waltham, MA, up until his passing. Steve was an avid motorhead. He loved everything classic car-related.

If you asked him a question about a classic, 9 times out of 10, he could give you the answer. He owned several classic cars, but his baby was his 1969 Mercury Cougar Convertible affectionately known as Tinkerbell. Steve was a board member for the local chapter of Lambda Car Club International (Yankee Chapter). He was one of two Steve’s in the family and was lovingly named “Auntie Steve” by several of his nieces. This nickname was picked up by his family and closest friends, as well as co-workers, and he was proud of it.

Stephen is survived by his loving husband of 22 years, David K. Lones of Medford, His brother, Jeffrey Smith Jr. of Everett, and roommate, friend, and adopted sister Denise Thorud of Medford. He also has two cousins, Anne Bosley of Laconia, NH, and Janet Mohrmann of Waterville, OH. There are also many nieces and nephews, as well as brothers and sisters-in-law, and many, many friends.
