Temple Emmanuel of Wakefield, Celebrating 75 Years

September 9, 10, and 11, 2022

Wakefield, MA — Temple Emmanuel of Wakefield is planning its 75th Anniversary as a congregation in September with a weekend of activities beginning on Friday evening, September 9, with a musical Shabbat featuring Bashert and the dedication of the Selma Pomeranz Memorial Library at 7:30 pm. The Saturday morning Shabbat service at 9:30am will be followed by a special Kiddush. Both events will be hybrid with Covid safety for those who attend in person, masks recommended.

A Gala Celebration with an anniversary program highlighting special historic events and honoring well-deserving Temple members will be held under a tent on Sunday, September 11 at noon. Reservations were required for the Sunday luncheon. The featured speakers will be Reverend Glenn Mortimer, Methodist Association Clergy Chair and Rabbi Marc Baker, President and Chief Executive Officer of Combined Jewish Philanthropies of Greater Boston.

  • Temple Emmanuel’s building was built around 1918 by Congressman Thayer and then owned by the Robert Yeuell family before the Temple purchased the building and its charter signed in 1947.
  • Rosamond Leavitt’s election as the First Woman President of a Conservative Temple in the 50s made national news.
  • Letters were received from President Eisenhower and Senator John F. Kennedy, and Mrs. Weizmann congratulating the Temple’s dedication of Weizmann Hall, first place to be named after Chaim Weizmann, first Israeli president, passed away in 1954.
  • Sanctuary chairs came from Wakefield’s Princess Theater on its closing.
  • Veterans are honored with the Four Chaplains monument by the front door.
  • Temple Emmanuel in 2022 is a member of the Jewish Reconstructionist Communities, welcoming to all led by Rabbi Gregory Hersh. Reconstructionist Judaism is a Jewish movement that views Judaism as a progressively evolving civilization rather than a religion, based on concepts developed by Rabbi Mordecai Kaplan. Along with Shabbat and Jewish holiday services, we have an active Sisterhood, Book Club, Continuing Education programs, and our once-a-week CHAI school.
