Korean War Vets Eligible for Medal

Veterans who served in Korea between June 25, 1950 and July 27, 1953 may be eligible to receive a new medal. The Korean Ambassador for Peace Medal is an expression of appreciation from the Korean government to American service men and women who served in the Korean War.  To be eligible, veterans must have served IN-COUNTRY during the Korean War from June 25, 1950 to July 27, 1953. If a veteran was a member of the Navy and served aboard a naval vessel, then he or she is eligible if the naval vessel was assigned to Korean waters during the 1950 to 1953 time frame. Aviators who engaged in Korean air space are also eligible.  It is also available for the veterans who participated in UN peacekeeping operations until the end of 1955.

Veterans who believe they are eligible should contact Reading Veterans’ Services Officer, Kevin Bohmiller, at 781-942-6652, or kbohmiller@ci.reading.ma.us, for more information and an application. If a person is a surviving spouse or family member of a Korean War Veteran he or she can contact Bohmiller as the medal may be awarded posthumously.

A DD Form 214 will be required to receive the decoration.  Assistance in obtaining a DD-214 is available.

The deadline to apply is Thursday, September 14, 2017.
