Obituary: Paul R. Marlin, 97

May 29, 1929 – June 5, 2026

Paul R. Marlin, age 97, a longtime resident of Reading and North Reading, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 5, 2026, with family at his side. He was the cherished Husband of Virginia Chipman Marlin for 75 years.

Paul was a proud U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and a devoted husband, father, grandfather, Great-Grandfather, and friend.  He will be missed by many and remembered for his quick wit and sense of humor.

Paul was the son of the late John & Janette Marlin of Medford, MA, and the brother of the late Betty Marlin Gates of Malden and Yarmouth and the late Evelyn Marlin Lord of Beaumont, TX.

Paul grew up in Medford and attended Medford High School, where he met the love of his life, Virginia Chipman Marlin. They were married in 1951, moved to Reading and built their house where they lived for 47 years. Paul and Virginia celebrated their 75th Wedding Anniversary in February 2026.

Paul was the loving Father of one daughter, Laura Vargas (Manuel) of St Petersburg, FL; and one son, Jack Marlin (Karen) of North Reading. Paul was the beloved Grandfather of Manuel Vargas (Daisha) of FL, Nicolas Vargas, of FL, Stephanie Marlin Harkin (Patrick) of RI, and Andrew Marlin, of MA. Great grandchildren include Madeline Vargas, Abigail Vargas, Amara Vargas, Ava Vargas and Connor Harkin. Paul was the beloved Uncle of dozens of nieces and nephews.

Paul was a CDT – Certified Dental Technician, and together with his devoted wife Virginia Marlin, owned and operated the Boylston Dental Lab for over 40 years. Paul loved working on home improvement projects, landscaping and gardening. He enjoyed music and played the organ and many other instruments.

Paul enjoyed many Summers at the family cottage on Lake Winnipesaukee. In retirement he enjoyed Winters in Florida with family and friends. He was active in the community in the Church of the Good Shepherd, Reading, MA. Paul was a Mason for over 65 years, was named Honorary Past Commander of Reading Commandry, and a member of the Good Samaritan Lodge, Scottish Rite of Boston, Reading Royal Arch, and Aleppo Shriners of Wilmington. Paul was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War.

As a father, grandfather and uncle, Paul was a tremendous help to family and friends with any project, large or small. Throughout his life he enjoyed playing and coaching baseball and in later years playing weekly golf with his friends.

A gathering of friends and family and service will be at the Douglass, Edgerley & Besssom Funeral Home, 25 Woburn Street in Reading on Saturday, June 20, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM. Interment with military honors will be at Wood End Cemetery, Franklin Street, Reading, MA.
