Bill to honor families of fallen law enforcement officers with special license plates
BOSTON – State Representative Richard M. Haggerty (D-Woburn) recently joined his colleagues in the House of Representatives to pass S.2903 (H.5439), An Act Honoring Blue Star Families. The bill requires the Registrar of Motor Vehicles (RMV) to provide, at no cost, a special “Blue Star Family” license plate to the parent, child, sibling, grandchild, or spouse of a law enforcement officer who was killed in the line of duty. Family members who ride motorcycles can also receive a “Blue Star Family” emblem to display on their motorcycle plate.
Reading knows all too well the dangers of policing, having lost Officer Tamar Bucci in the line of duty. Officer Bucci’s sacrifice is a powerful reminder of the risks that law enforcement officers face every single day as they work to keep our communities safe. The legislation offers Officer Bucci’s family and families like hers across the Commonwealth a meaningful and lasting way to remember and honor their loved one who made the ultimate sacrifice.
“Blue Star Families have made the ultimate sacrifice, losing a loved one who devoted their life to protecting and serving our communities,” said Representative Haggerty. “Here in Reading, we know this pain firsthand having lost Officer Tamar Bucci in the line of duty. This legislation is a small but meaningful way for the Commonwealth to honor her and others like her, and to remember and recognize the immeasurable loss their families carry every day. I am proud to stand with my colleagues in ensuring that the bravery and dedication of these fallen heroes and their families is never forgotten. I want to thank House Speaker Ronald Mariano, Chairman Aaron Michlewitz, and House Leadership for their work in advancing this important bill.”
The bill passed the House of Representatives by a unanimous vote of 156-0.
