Washington, D.C. — Today, Congressman Seth Moulton (D-MA) submitted amendments to the so-called “Big Beautiful Bill,” recently passed by the Senate, to address serious concerns around fiscal transparency and humane immigration enforcement. One of the amendments would prohibit overnight detentions at ICE field offices, like the one in Burlington. He has also signed on to several other amendments, listed below.
“Republicans in Congress, the people who once claimed to be the party of fiscal responsibility, are rushing to make Americans sicker and poorer (unless you are already ultra-wealthy, that is). President Trump and every member of Congress were elected with a responsibility to make their constituents’ lives better, and now every Republican who votes in favor of this bill is abandoning that responsibility. This bill is an embarrassment.”
As the bill goes back to the House for a vote this week, members of the House have a short window to submit their own amendments for consideration.
Moulton has submitted the following amendments:
- Ensure humane treatment of detainees by prohibiting overnight detention in ICE field offices, like in Burlington, that are not expressly designated and equipped as long-term facilities, except in exigent circumstances.
- Increase fiscal transparency for future generations by requiring the Congressional Budget Office to analyze how the bill’s impact on the national debt will affect the tax burdens of children under 18 over the next 25 years.
Moulton has also signed on to:
- An amendment to strike harmful changes to the SNAP program.
- An amendment to eliminate the proposed tax credit for gun silencers.
- An amendment to restore Department of Transportation funding for the Reconnecting Communities program—which would support projects like the Allston Multimodal Project.
- An amendment to strike provisions that would block Medicaid funding for community health centers and nonprofits that provide family planning services.
- An amendment to require the Federal Reserve to conduct a study on the impact tariffs have on the cost of goods and services.
- An amendment prohibiting the removal of Pell Grants for students enrolled in at least 12 credit hours at an accredited college, university, or trade school.
“If Republicans want to talk about being the party of families and fiscal responsibility, they should do a better job at protecting both,” said Moulton.
