Volunteers and local youth honor over 2,500 veterans with flags and geraniums as officials encourage donations to support the longstanding tribute

Reading, MA — Every year, a team of volunteers marks the graves of Veterans in our four cemeteries – Laurel Hill, Forest Glen, Charles Lawn, and Wood End. Once the markers are placed, teams of young people put a flag and a geranium on each grave. A drive or a walk through our cemeteries reminds us how many have served to keep our country free. The first burial at Laurel Hill was in 1737. Since then, over 2500 veterans have been laid to rest in our cemeteries.
The flowers are paid for by the Veterans Memorial Trust Fund. As you can imagine, the cost goes up each year. Please consider donating to support this important cause. Make checks payable to the Town of Reading (in the memo line – Veterans Flower Fund), and send them to Town of Reading, 16 Lowell Street, Reading, MA, Attention: Veterans Services.
Honor and thank our veterans by ensuring this tradition can continue. And thank you for your generous support.
