Obituary: Meghan K. (McWeeney) Melo, 32

April 16, 1993 – June 3, 2025

Meghan K. (McWeeney) Melo, a resident of Tewksbury for the past eight years and formerly of Reading, passed away peacefully on June 3, 2025, at Massachusetts General Hospital, surrounded by her loving family and friends, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was 32 years old.

Meghan was born on April 16, 1993, in Boston, Massachusetts, and was the cherished daughter of Cyril and Kathryn “Kara” (Shaw) McWeeney of Reading. She was a proud graduate of Reading Memorial High School, where she was an active and passionate member of the school’s Drama Club. Meghan later earned her bachelor’s degree from Wheelock College and went on to obtain her Master’s in Mental Health Counseling from Lesley University.

Meghan was the beloved wife of Joe M. Melo and the devoted mother of Caleb J. Melo of Tewksbury — the center of her world and the light of her life. She was the loving sister of Matthew C. McWeeney and his girlfriend, Sydney Willwerth, of Melrose. Daughter-in-law to Maria and Joseph Melo of Reading and sister-in-law to Jessica and Ahmed Theeb of Haverhill. Meghan is also survived by many devoted aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends whose lives she touched deeply.

Meghan dedicated her life to caring for others. She was a compassionate and gifted mental health counselor, always providing empathy, guidance, and support to those in need. She poured her heart into her work and brought healing to countless individuals and families.

True to her giving nature, Meghan was also a passionate advocate and fundraiser for Voices of Hope, a local nonprofit committed to cancer research. She channeled her creativity into crafting and selling handmade goods, donating all proceeds to support cancer research, even while bravely fighting cancer herself. She also participated in clinical trials, always driven by a hope to help others and make a difference in the lives of future patients.

Beyond her professional and philanthropic pursuits, Meghan was a talented figure skater and a vibrant member of the North Shore Skating Club and Theater on Ice. She had a magnetic personality, a joyful presence, and a heart full of love. She brought people together with her warmth and humor, often through her love of entertaining. Meghan took great joy in hosting gatherings, cooking delicious meals, and creating welcoming spaces filled with laughter, comfort, and connection.

Above all, Meghan was a devoted and adoring mother. Her son Caleb was her greatest joy, and every decision, every act of courage, and every dream was centered around building a bright and love-filled future for him.

Visiting hours will be held at the Douglass, Edgerley & Bessom Funeral Home, 25 Sanborn Street, Reading, on Monday, June 9, 2025, from 3–7PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Athanasius Church, 300 Haverhill Street, Reading, on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, at 10:30AM. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden.

To honor Meghan’s vibrant spirit and the many lives she touched, the family kindly invites guests to wear “Meghan Strong” shirts or pink clothing to the funeral services — a tribute to the brightness she brought to the world. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Meghan’s memory to Voices of Hope or to the GoFundMe for caleb Melo, which will help support the future Meghan so lovingly envisioned for her son — one filled with love, learning, adventure, and opportunity.
