BOSTON – State Representative Richard Haggerty (D-Woburn) was recently honored as the 2025 Legislator of the Year by the Massachusetts Academy of Family Physicians (MassAFP) during their annual Advocacy Day event on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, at the University of Massachusetts Club in Boston.
The award recognizes legislators who demonstrate an understanding and show a commitment to the healthcare system broadly while showing leadership in the specific areas of primary care and family medicine.
“The Massachusetts Academy of Family Physicians is proud to honor Rep. Richard Haggerty as the recipient of the 2025 Legislator of the Year Award for Family Medicine. Representative Haggerty’s commitment to the health care system as a whole, and his understanding and appreciation of the important role that family physicians play is notable. We appreciate his thoughtful approach to public policy and look forward to our continued partnership in pursuit of important legislative outcomes,” said Massachusetts Academy of Family Physicians President Michael Richardson, MD.
“I am truly honored to receive this recognition from the Massachusetts Academy of Family Physicians,” said Rep. Haggerty. “Family physicians are the backbone of our healthcare system, providing essential comprehensive care to Massachusetts families in every corner of our Commonwealth. I look forward to continuing our work together on strengthening the primary care infrastructure, addressing physician workforce challenges, and ensuring that quality healthcare remains accessible to all Massachusetts residents regardless of where they live or their circumstances. Working alongside organizations like MassAFP is critical to creating healthcare policies that truly serve our communities and improve the lives of our residents.”
Haggerty received the award before speaking at the event, which brought together physicians, residents, and medical students to advocate for key healthcare priorities. The day included meetings with state legislators and their staff to discuss critical bills supporting family medicine, primary care, and health equity.
During the Advocacy Day, MassAFP members focused on several priority bills, including legislation to strengthen primary care through the PC4You initiative and advance health equity across Massachusetts.
