Eleanor Jane “Tickie” Noyes, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on November 16, 2024, in Charlottesville, Virginia, leaving behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. Born Eleanor Jane Turner on February 18, 1934, in Walpole, Massachusetts, Tickie was the daughter of Marjorie Boynton Day and Robert Edgar Turner. Her unique nickname, “Tickie,” originated from her brother Robert E. Turner, Jr.’s childhood pronunciation of “sister.”
Tickie attended the Stone School in Walpole and graduated from Reading High School in 1952. She pursued higher education at the University of Maine, earning a BA in Business in 1956. Her first job was at John Hancock Life Insurance Company, where she worked before marrying Merle Leroy Noyes on September 7, 1957, at the First Congregational Church in Reading, Massachusetts.
The couple settled in Frenchtown, New Jersey, where they raised their two children, Cynthia Jane Noyes Simonds (Cindy) and Roy Ordel Noyes. While raising Cindy and Roy, Tickie served as an office manager for JL Mooreshead and later established her own business, Tickie’s Ceramics. Renowned for her love of crafts, she was often sought after as a seamstress and later turned her artistic talents to doll making. In the late 1980s, Tickie and Merle relocated to Columbus, Indiana, before retiring to their beloved lake house on Smith Mountain Lake in Wirtz, Virginia. While living there Tickie delighted in frequent visits from her children and grandchildren and their families, and was an important part of their daily lives. In her final year, Tickie resided at Rosewood Village in Charlottesville, Virginia, where she was surrounded by care and comfort.
Tickie is survived by her loving children, five grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter, all of whom will forever hold her memory close to their hearts. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
There will be a Celebration of Life for Tickie at 155 Cove Drive at 2pm on January 11, 2024.
