Obituary: David M. Petkewich, 77

March 22, 1947 — August 30, 2024

David M. Petkewich of Reading passed away peacefully on Friday, August 30, 2024, at age 77.

Born and raised in Marblehead, Dave was the son of the late Margaret and Peter “Pete” Petkewich and grew up with strong bonds to his sister and brother. He made his career as a civil engineer. His work colleagues were like family to him, and he enjoyed these friendships until his last day. He spent countless hours cheering on his kids at their numerous activities and loved to regale them with stories of his mischievous childhood adventures. He played hockey for 30 years. Later in life, he enjoyed playing golf, traveling with his wife, sailing in Maine with family and friends on the Schooner American Eagle, and playing with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years Mary Lou (LaCroix) Petkewich; children Rachel Petkewich (husband Jason Nichols) and Jarrod Petkewich (wife Perrin LaPlante); grandchildren Isaac Nichols and Leo Nichols and step-grandchildren Jet Schilling and Finn Schilling; and sister Christine Van Remoortel (husband John) and brother the late Peter Petkewich.

Dave’s family affectionately called him “good neighbor Dave” because he genuinely loved interacting with everyone he met in his daily life. He had a smile for everyone and almost never sat still. He devoted a lot of his free time to volunteering, including more than two decades with the Special Olympics. Although he was a lifelong fan of all Boston sports teams, he was always seen wearing a New England Patriots hat.

A funeral service celebrating David’s life will be held on Saturday, September 14th at 10 am in the Doherty – Barile Family Funeral Home, 11 Linden St. READING. Family and friends are cordially invited to gather and share memories on Friday, September 13th from 5-7 pm in the Funeral Home. Parking attendants and elevator are available.
