Obituary: William Donald Hume Sr., 77, RMHS Class of ’64

October 21, 1946 ~ March 7, 2024

Charlotte, NC – W. Donald “Don” Hume, Sr of Charlotte, NC, died on Thursday, March 7, 2024. He passed at home with his daughter by his side. Don was born in Stoneham on October 21, 1946, beloved son of the late William Dawson (1976) and Mary “Molly” (Boutilier) Hume (1995.)

He was raised in Reading, MA and graduated from Reading Memorial High School, Class of 1964. He was a self-taught scholar after a short stint at a college in Boston, a voracious reader, and a crossword puzzle junkie. He had a long career in Information Technology (IT) as a Programmer and Manager for several companies that took him and his family from Massachusetts to North Carolina back to Massachusetts and again to North Carolina with his final IT position working on the Y2K project to help make sure the world’s computers continued to function after December 31, 1999.

As the second dad to so many of his children’s friends growing up the door was always open and another place could be set at the table for anyone who was a part of his children’s lives. He was also a very patient, kind, and caring man, teaching so many how to drive, coaching Little League, or being an ear to listen to when family or friends needed advice or someone to talk to. His love of Boston sports was almost as great as his love of his family with the Red Sox being his favorite team, seeing more games than he could count at Fenway Park.

He leaves his four loving children, Donnie Hume (Michelle) of Cross Plains, WI, Gerry Hume (Michele) of Agawam, MA, Addie Hume (Christopher) of Agawam, MA and Christian Hume (Kristin) of Waxhaw, NC; his seven cherished grandchildren, Matthew Pereira (Brittany,) Shayna Hume (Josh,) Jordan Hume, Taylor Hume, William Gamble, Bobby Gamble & Liam Hume along with a great-grandson Santi Pereira and his many nephews, nieces, great nephews, great nieces, extended family in Canada and many family friends that felt like family. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by his sister in 2023, Christine (Hume) Cook, brother James Hume in 1980, and James’ wife, sister-in-law, Faith (McLaughlin) Hume in 2018.

The family will receive visitors from 3-5PM on Thursday, March 28, 2024 at Colonial Forastiere Funeral & Cremation, 985 Main St., Agawam, MA with a service following at 5PM. Donations may be made in Don’s name to the Gray House, 22 Sheldon St., Springfield, MA 01107. For online condolences please visit www.forastiere.com.
