Obituary: William A. Coveney, 98

September 25, 1924 ~ December 15, 2022

William Augustus Coveney Jr., early in his 98th year, passed into eternal life on December 15 in the presence of his loving family. His was a life well-lived and dedicated to family, faith and county. He was the beloved husband of the late Shirley (Brenan) Coveney and Helen (Keefe Concannon) Coveney. Devoted father of Kevin Coveney and his wife Joanne of Chestertown, MD, Christopher Coveney of West Roxbury, Virginia (Concannon) Chandler and her husband Mark of Prospect Hill, NC., Thomas Concannon and his wife Paula of Hampstead, NH, Timothy Concannon and his wife Suzanne of Kensington, NH and Mary (Concannon) Ines and her husband Dana of North Reading.

Beloved brother of James Coveney of Phoenix, AZ, Janet Herlihy of Burlington, MA and Dianne Wentworth and her husband Russell of Rockland. Mr. Coveney was predeceased by his beloved parents, William and Bertha Coveney, siblings Sister Mary Therese Coveney, Order of Discalced Carmelites, Joseph Coveney, John Coveney and Bertha Coveney and loving companion Rita Meara.

He was the beloved “Grampy” to his grandchildren Jennifer, Elizabeth, William, Luke, Sarah, Laura, Kathryn, Erin, Allison, Andrew and great-grandchildren Patrick, Annalee, Hudson, Benjamin, Jackson and Bronwyn. He was also “Uncle Billy” to his many much-loved nieces and nephews.

Bill was born in Dorchester and was a longtime resident of Weymouth and Reading. He was a Word War II Army veteran, attaining the rank of Sergeant while serving with the 79th Infantry Division in Europe. Bill also dedicated twenty-five years of service to the local council of the Boy Scouts of America.

Funeral from the Cota Funeral Home, 335 Park St. (corner of Park St. and Rte. 28) North Reading at Reading line in Tuesday, Dec. 20th at 10:30 am. Relatives and friends may visit at the funeral home Tuesday from 9:30am thru 10:30am. Funeral Mass in Saint Athanasius Church, 300 Haverhill St., Reading at 11am. Interment to follow with military honors in Forest Glen Cemetery, Reading. If desired donations in Bill’s name may be made to the Carmelite Monastery, 15 Mount Carmel Rd. Danvers, MA. 01923.
