Janice Louise Bertram Bruce of Reading, Massachusetts, died peacefully at her home on Thursday, September 16, 2021.
Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts on August 24, 1931, the daughter of the late George E.M. Bertram and Bertha M. (Silva) Bertram.
Janice was the wife of the late Jacob Baldwin Bruce, III and the sister of the late Charlotte Minich. Mother of Douglas A. Bruce and his wife Sheila of Reading, Donna L. Bruce, and her partner Bill O’Brien of Stoneham and Craig L. Bruce and his friend Suzie of Ipswich.
She is also survived by her grandchildren Kristen Lachance and her husband Matthew of Reading, Matthew Bruce and his wife Jacki of Manchester, New Hampshire, Lindsay Hurley and her husband Zack of Litchfield, New Hampshire, Kelly Bruce of Manchester, New Hampshire, and Eric Walkup and his wife Noreen of Derry, New Hampshire.
She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Jaxon and Mason Lachance of Reading, Lilly and Chase Tabor, and Landon and Brennan Walkup of Derry, New Hampshire.
She also leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews and friends.
Janice graduated from Belmont High School Class of 1949, Green Mountain College, and Russell Sage College class of 1953.
Janice was very active in girls and women’s sports. She officiated over 1,700 games over her lifetime. She was also an administrator of girls and women’s sports. A set of games she was most proud of is officiating the first girls state finals in basketball, field hockey, and softball. Janice was also inducted into the Belmont High School Hall of Fame in 1997. Janice was also a golf enthusiast and played in the Hillview Golf League and the Sagamore Spring Golf League in Lynnfield, where she made many friends.
Towards the end of her life, her greatest joy was watching her grandchildren grow to be kind and responsible adults and to watch her great-grandchildren grow and play.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Church of the Good Shepherd 95 Woburn St. Reading on Saturday, October 2 at 12:30 PM. Burial is private.
