Obituary: Carol J. Oliver, 88

November 27, 1932 – May 11, 2020

Carol J. Oliver (née Carol Ann Johnson) of Reading passed away on May 11, 2020 after a brief illness.

Daughter of Vernon L. Johnson and Margaret Fraser Johnson, Carol grew up in New Providence, NJ. As a teen, she attended Summit High School in Summit, NJ, and enjoyed tennis, horseback riding, and working as a camp counselor during the summer. Upon completing high school in 1950, she attended Bates College in Lewiston, ME, where she majored in English and completed a teacher training program.

After graduating from college in 1954, Carol accepted a position as a teacher of English at Reading Memorial High School; in Reading, she met J. Douglas Oliver, the director of music for the Reading school system. They later married and raised two children, Geoffrey and Janet Oliver. After a leave from teaching, Carol returned to the Reading school system as a substitute teacher and a special aide instructor.

Carol enjoyed gardening, reading, doing puzzles, and traveling. She and her husband, Doug, took several trips to Europe and Asia. They especially loved staying in small, family-run inns, exploring out of the way destinations on their own, and getting to know local inhabitants. For many years they maintained correspondence with friends they had made in some of the countries they visited.

A private graveside service was held at Forest Glen Cemetery on Friday, May 15.
