To the editor:

This Tuesday I will cast one of my two votes for Barry Berman in the Select Board race. I will vote for Barry because I would like to see him continue to promote smart economic development in the downtown and in the Walker’s Brook area; continue his efforts to foster a community of tolerance and diversity; and continue to propose innovative ideas to help Reading meet the many challenges it faces with its new residential growth.

After serving for many years on Town Meeting and the Finance Committee, Barry stepped forward to serve on the Select Board in what I considered to be a difficult environment. I admired his willingness to do this. On the Board, he has demonstrated his leadership skills by proposing and bringing to fruition the Permanent Building Committee, an important addition to our oversight resources. His leadership was crucial to getting a comprehensive, rather than competitive, override question on the ballot last spring. He also played a key role in establishing the senior tax relief program and recruiting and appointing numerous volunteers to our many boards and commissions.

Barry will bring an experienced, balanced perspective to the Select Board. Please join me in voting for him this Tuesday.
