CodeRED “Short Code” Changes for Text Message Alerts

Residents Advised to Program New Number into Mobile Devices

Reading, MA –- The Town of Reading announces a minor change in the Community Alerts text messages. Please be advised that on Wednesday, December 13th CodeRED will be changing the short code (number) for SMS text messages to 76993. This new number should be programmed into recipients’ mobile devices to ensure awareness for future CodeRED alerts. Please note, a short code is a 5-digit number that CodeRED uses to send messages to mobile devices and the number that comes across when an alert is delivered. Once a resident programs this number into a mobile device under the proper name, all messages will display as addressed from “CodeRED Alert”. No further action is required.

What is a short code? A short five or six digit number sequence that is displayed on the recipient’s phone when they receive a CodeRED message. These codes are designed to be easy to read and remember, allowing your residents to save the number into their address book.
