With a 36.9 percent turnout the town emphatically said that it is not prepared to authorize a $7.5 million override. The unofficial counts show that 2,803 were in favor, while 4,095 voters said no.  That translates to about 41 percent to 59 percent. The vote was similar across all eight precincts.

As the tally came in Selectman Barry Berman commented “We’ll go back to the drawing board, and we will have a balanced budget.” He added “Everything is on the table, and there are no sacred cows.”

The Board of Selectmen will begin planning for the future at its next meeting, and the next financial forum is slated for November.
