Austin Prep Student-Athlete Dylan Cunningham Commits to Virginia Baseball

READING, MA — Austin Prep junior Dylan Cunningham ’28, identified by New England Baseball Journal as New England’s top uncommitted prospect earlier this fall, has committed to continue his baseball career at the University of Virginia. The Peabody resident will have the opportunity to develop as both a pitcher and a hitter at a program with a national championship and seven College World Series appearances.

After visiting Virginia and Auburn, Cunningham chose UVA for its coaching relationships and the opportunity to contribute on both sides of the ball.

“I found where I wanted to be. I knew it was UVA,” Cunningham said. “That coaching staff was great to me and was great to my family.”

Cunningham brings a record of high school success and national experience to that next step. The right-hander led Austin Prep in innings pitched during the 2026 season, reached 95.1 mph at the Prep Baseball Future Games, and participated in the USA Baseball National Team Development Program. During the Cougars’ New England Diamond Duel championship run, he improved to 4–1 with a 0.55 earned run average and 43 strikeouts.

“My scouting report would be ultra aggressive, ultra competitive, always wants the ball, always wants the at-bat,” said Austin Prep Head Baseball Coach Jonathan Pollard ’97. “And that’s exactly the kind of guy we’re looking for at Austin Prep and any collegiate program would be fortunate to have.”

Cunningham transferred to Austin Prep after his freshman season at Peabody High School, reclassifying into the Class of 2028. As he considered his college future, he drew on connections within the Austin Prep baseball community.

Former Austin Prep catcher Bradley McCafferty ’26, who previously caught Cunningham and recently joined Virginia, shared his perspective on the program. Cunningham also consulted Austin Prep alumnus Evan Blanco ’22, who pitched at UVA and recently signed with the Athletics.

“Putting in the work when I get there is going to be a huge part and just performing at the highest level,” Cunningham said.

His outlook on heading to Virginia and getting the ball: “Everything has to be earned.”
