Reading Public Library Celebrates Library Card Sign-Up Month

Get a special edition library card featuring a winning design by an 11-year-old Reading resident throughout September

Reading Public Library (RPL), Reading, MA— New in town? Come to the Reading Public Library in September to sign up for your library card, and you’ll receive a special edition card!

September is Library Card Sign-Up Month, and to celebrate, the Reading Public Library held a library card design contest for children this year. The winning design, created by Stella, age 11, is our special edition card for the entire month. If you need to renew your card, or you have a card but really want the awesome new design, stop by the Borrower Services desk to get one—we’re waiving replacement card fees for the month of September.

The Reading Public Library is for everyone—no matter your age, background, or goals. Getting a library card is free, easy, and empowering. For students, it’s a key to academic success. For adults, it’s a gateway to lifelong learning. For everyone, it’s a smart way to stay connected to your community, and it all starts with a free library card.

At the Reading Public Library, you can:

  • Check out books, magazines, movies, and music—in print and streaming on Libby.
  • Attend storytimes and meet Shelvis, our turtle!
  • Hear an author discuss their latest work, or join a book group.
  • Borrow a wide array of tools, educational toys, and games through the Library of Things collection.
  • Learn a new tech skill, or search out your ancestors with our Local History librarian.

Library Card Sign-Up Month has been held each September since 1987 to mark the beginning of the school year, combat illiteracy, and encourage communities everywhere to explore all the offerings that having a library card unlocks. Today, thousands of public libraries and schools nationwide participate in the month-long celebration each fall.
