Reading, MA — Town officials, state legislators, and community members gathered this week to break ground on the Reading Center for Active Living (RECAL) and a new seven-court pickleball complex, marking the start of a major community investment aimed at expanding recreation and wellness opportunities for residents of all ages.
Town Manager Jane Wellman opened the ceremony by reflecting on the significance of the moment, stating, “Today’s groundbreaking is more than the start of a project. It’s the celebration of years of commitment, collaboration, and belief in what this community can become.”

State Representative Brad Jones praised Reading’s long-standing commitment to serving residents across all life stages, while Representative Richard Hagerty commended the town’s leadership and voters for their support of the project. Hagerty also noted ongoing efforts to improve senior transportation, including funding for a community van.
Select Board Chair Melissa Murphy described the project as the result of sustained community effort, stating, “Projects like this don’t happen overnight. They are results of years of commitment, collaboration, and belief in our community.”
Council on Aging Chair Karen Janowski shared a personal reflection on how pickleball and community spaces have helped residents through isolation and loss, underscoring the importance of accessible recreational programming.
Town staff and project partners, including designers, engineers, and volunteers, were widely recognized for their contributions. Jenna Wood, Director of Community Services, emphasized the broader impact of the development, saying the new spaces will “promote health and wellness, but also create opportunities for connection, friendship, and a stronger sense of belonging.”
The Reading Pickleball Players Association also played a key role in advocating for the courts, celebrating the addition of dedicated, lighted facilities designed to expand access to the sport.
Construction will be led by J&J Construction and Cork Construction, with the completed project expected to serve as a central community destination for recreation, programming, and social connection for years to come.
