Winchester, MA – Made possible by a generous $2.5 million gift from Cummings Foundation, one of Winchester Hospital’s leading philanthropic partners, the hospital has completed the renovation of its newly named Dr. Peter Rotolo Labor and Delivery Unit. The renovated space provides a modern and nurturing environment for families welcoming newborns, supporting the hospital’s approximately 2,600 births each year. The foundation’s gift honors the legacy of the late Dr. Peter Rotolo, a beloved obstetrician-gynecologist with more than 40 years of service to Winchester and surrounding communities.
“Cummings Foundation’s support of Winchester Hospital reflects a powerful commitment to expanding access to high-quality, community-based health care,” said Tim Jones, MBA, FACHE, interim president, Winchester Hospital. “We are pleased to reopen a refreshed, modernized space that welcomes families during one of life’s most meaningful moments. This renovation strengthens our ability to provide exceptional, compassionate care close to home.”

The completed renovation includes upgrades to the unit’s 10 Labor, Delivery and Recovery rooms and nurses’ station. These spaces now feature top-of-the-line technology and equipment, improved lighting, updated furniture, and refreshed finishes to create a more comfortable patient environment. The project also adds a new, larger hydrotherapy labor tub.
“The upgrades to the unit reflect what is possible when generosity and mission come together,” says Karen Keaney, DHA, RN, chief nursing officer & vice president of Patient Care Services. “We are profoundly thankful to Cummings Foundation for enabling us to transform this space and honored to name our unit after the beloved Dr. Peter Rotolo. These improvements elevate the birth experience for our patients and families and create a better environment to support the exceptional care our team provides.”
“Cummings Foundation is delighted to celebrate Dr. Rotolo’s remarkable legacy,” said Joyce Vyriotes, executive director, Cummings Foundation. “He cared for countless families with exceptional skill and compassion, and our philanthropic investment is intended to help ensure that future parents experience that same sense of trust and support when they come to Winchester Hospital.”
“Our priority is to provide the safest, most comfortable setting for patients who have entrusted us with the delivery of their newborn,” said Elinor Brown, MD, chair, Obstetrics & Gynecology. “Patients from Winchester to southern New Hampshire will feel supported during this special time while receiving care at Winchester Hospital.”
Winchester Hospital also has a Level 2B Special Care Nursery that provides around-the-clock neonatologist care for the hospital’s most vulnerable newborns. The hospital is now undertaking a fundraising effort to renovate and enhance this vital unit.
