Reading, MA — At the corner of West and Woburn Streets, the lighting of the fir tree, planted 75 years ago by the late Jack and Brendan Hoyt, is an annual event.
Inside is another tradition, the display of a beautiful poinsettia plant, seen here with Sally Hoyt, Reading constable for 52 years and family matriarch.
Sally Hoyt served as a member of the Board of Selectmen from 1990 to 2001 and a member of the Conservation Commission from 1980 to 1990. She is still active in the Mass Bay Constables Association. She was first elected Constable in 1972, but when the Town Charter was passed and the structure of the Town government changed, Town Selectmen became appointees of Constables. This summer, she was reappointed as a Reading Constable for her 52nd year.
