Reading, MA — On June 16, the Reading Antiquarian Society will be celebrating 100 years as owners of Parker Tavern! The Tavern was built in 1694 by Abraham Bryant, Jr., and was owned by several prominent families over the centuries. By the early 20th century, the building had fallen into disrepair. The Society was formed in 1916 with the primary objective of saving Parker Tavern, which was by then scheduled for demolition. On June 16, 1923, they were able to purchase the property. Extensive restoration was then undertaken, and in 1930, the museum was opened to the public. The Society is a 501c3 organization, supported solely by membership and donations, and always welcomes new members.
The Tavern is open every Sunday, May through October, from 2-5 PM. Come to learn more about Reading’s history from the late 17th century through the early 20th century. The building is furnished to show how life in Reading progressed through the years. There is always something new to learn. The flower and herb gardens are maintained by the Reading Garden Club. And the vegetable garden is planted and maintained by the Society. Come see what is growing this year!
