Alan D. McCarthy of North Reading, formerly a long-time resident of Reading and Wakefield, passed away on October 7, 2026, at Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Hospital in Bedford, Massachusetts. He was 81 years of age.
Alan was born in Melrose, Massachusetts, on June 6, 1945, the son of the late Herbert and Louise McCarthy. Alan grew up in Reading and graduated from North Reading High School. Alan honorably served in the US Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, and he raised his family in Wakefield, MA. He was a devoted husband, father, brother, and friend. Alan was a lifelong motorcycle enthusiast and a country music devotee. He loved being with people, helping his loved ones, and making things with his hands.
Alan was the devoted father of Alan D. McCarthy and his wife Kelly of Arlington VA; Sean P. McCarthy and his wife Susan of Derry, NH; and Brian C. McCarthy and his wife Nicole of Salem, NH. He was the loving grandfather of Katie and Emma McCarthy and cherished brother of Alice Donnely of FL, Janet Black of Florida, the late Louise Kumm, the late Herbert McCarthy, the late Cynthia Mallet and the late Patricia Duncan.
Visiting hours for Alan will be held at the Douglass, Edgerley and Bessom Funeral Home 25 Sanborn St. (corner of Woburn St.) Reading on Monday, October 12, from 10AM-12:00PM. A funeral service will follow the visitation at the funeral home at 12:00 PM. Burial will be private.
