A garden talk unlike any you’ve heard before

Author and Humorist to Share a Lighthearted Look at Gardening, Complete with Practical Advice, on November 12
Reading, MA — Why is so much gardening information on the internet so awful? Why is it impossible to do just one thing in the garden? Why should you never, ever compute the value of your labor when you garden? And why do we buy garden benches when none of us ever sits in them?
These are the questions that keep Neal Sanders awake at night. Fortunately for the rest of us, he has decided to share his answers.

The Reading Garden Club presents “Gardening is Murder” with Neal Sanders on Thursday, November 12, 11:00 am at St. Agnes Parish Center, 184 Woburn Street, Reading.
A Gardener’s Spouse Speaks
Neal Sanders is married to an avid and accomplished gardener, which means his official duties in the garden consist of digging holes and moving rocks. That arrangement has given him plenty of time to observe gardeners in their natural habitat and to take careful notes on their foibles.
In “Gardening Is Murder,” Neal offers a husband’s-eye view of the gardening life. He gardens less out of an abiding love of horticulture than out of love for his spouse, and that perspective is what makes his talk so fresh. Filled with humor and insight, he guarantees it will be unlike any gardening lecture you have ever attended.
Good Advice, Bad Advice, and a Few Laughs
Don’t mistake this for a talk that is all laughs and no substance. Good horticultural advice is dispensed along the way, and bad advice gets thoroughly debunked. You’ll leave with a few practical ideas for your own garden and, quite possibly, a new appreciation for what is going on in the mind of the person who is helping you carry the compost.
Whether you are the gardener, the helpmate, or a bit of both, you will recognize yourself, your partner, and your neighbors in Neal’s observations. Bring your spouse. Bring your garden club friends. Bring anyone who has ever muttered, “I’ll just do one quick thing out there,” and emerged four hours later covered in mulch.
Come for the laughs, stay for the horticultural wisdom, and find out why Neal says gardening may be a matter of life and death, or at least of aching backs and unused benches.
