Markey Leads Moulton In Senate Race As Koh Tops Crowded 6th Congressional Primary
Reading, MA — Reading voters cast 6,047 ballots in the September 1 State Primary, representing 28.9% of the town’s 20,944 registered voters, according to unofficial results released by the Town of Reading. Of the ballots cast, 4,807 were Democratic, and 1,240 were Republican. Town Clerk Laura Gemme said the results were unofficial.
On the Democratic ballot, Edward J. Markey received 2,518 votes to Seth Moulton’s 2,219 votes in the U.S. Senate primary.
In the Democratic primary for the 6th Congressional District, Dan Koh led the field with 2,014 votes. Tram T. Nguyen finished second with 1,233, followed by John A. Beccia III with 655, Jamie M. Belsito with 386, Mariah L. Lancaster with 146, and Bethany Andres-Beck with 145.
Among the statewide Democratic races, Maura Healey received 4,023 votes for governor, while Kimberley Driscoll received 3,894 votes for lieutenant governor. Andrea Joy Campbell received 3,787 votes for attorney general, William Francis Galvin received 4,046 votes for secretary of state, Deborah B. Goldberg received 3,773 votes for treasurer, and Diana DiZoglio received 3,738 votes for auditor.
Local Democratic Races
In the Governor’s Council race, Terrence W. Kennedy received 2,724 votes, compared with 1,175 for Diann Mary Baylis.
For the 5th Middlesex State Senate seat, Kate Lipper-Garabedian led with 2,738 votes. Carey McDonald received 690 votes, and Ryan J. O’Malley received 513.
In the 30th Middlesex State Representative primary, Richard M. Haggerty received 1,620 votes to Jadon Wilson’s 984 votes.
In the 20th Middlesex State Representative race, Joseph Markey received 1,302 votes in the precincts included in the contest.
For Middlesex District Attorney, Marian T. Ryan received 3,291 votes, compared with 887 for David Marc Solet. Tara E. DeCristofaro received 3,561 votes for Register of Probate.
Republican Primary
On the Republican ballot, John Deaton received 1,054 votes in the U.S. Senate primary.
For governor, Michael Roger Minogue led Brian Shortsleeve, 985 votes to 246.
Shawn Oliver received 914 votes for lieutenant governor, while Michael C. Walsh received 1,009 votes for attorney general and Elizabeth Dionne received 955 votes for treasurer.
In the Republican primary for the 6th Congressional District, Micah Quinney Jones received 912 votes.
For 20th Middlesex State Representative, Trevor David Currier received 317 votes.
Reading’s primary results largely reflected voters’ choices across Massachusetts, with the town backing the statewide winners in the major contested races.
The closest contest in Reading was the Democratic U.S. Senate primary, where Edward Markey defeated Seth Moulton by 299 votes, a considerably narrower margin than Markey’s statewide victory.
Reading also backed Dan Koh in the Democratic 6th Congressional District primary, Kate Lipper-Garabedian for state Senate, Richard Haggerty for state representative, and Marian Ryan for Middlesex District Attorney.
On the Republican ballot, Reading voters strongly favored Michael Roger Minogue for governor and supported the other Republican nominees who faced no significant opposition.
With 28.9% of Reading’s registered voters casting ballots, the results provide an early look at how local voters are positioned heading into the November general election.
The 2026 Massachusetts General Election is Tuesday, November 3, 2026. In Reading, polls will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Walter Hawkes Field House, 62 Oakland Road.
