Doris M. (Gerry) McCarthy, 97, of Reading, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, at her home in Reading. Doris was born in Boston on April 25, 1928, and has been a resident of Reading since 1952. She lived a long life rooted in love for her family and a devout faith.
Doris was a beloved wife, mother of seven, grandmother of fourteen, great-grandmother of ten, sister, and aunt known for her kindness, strength, and care she gave to those around her. She touched many lives throughout her 97 years and will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Doris’ faith guided her throughout her life, particularly during the challenges she had faced over the past few years. Her faith was an important part of who she was and a source of strength and comfort to those who knew her.
Her family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the nurses, aides, the chaplain, and their support teams at Care Dimensions Hospice Services for their compassionate medical care and support over the last several months. Doris was predeceased by her beloved husband, Charles E. McCarthy, her daughter, Annemarie O’Brien, and grandsons, Richard Foster and Daniel Foster.
She was the devoted mother of Charles J. McCarthy and his wife Evelyn of Beverly, Richard S. McCarthy and his wife Virginia of Lynn, Kathleen McCarthy of Pine Island, FL, Lorraine McLaughlin and her husband Michael of Winthrop, Robert P. McCarthy and his wife Diane of Haverhill, Deborah DelGreco and her husband Charles of Reading. Cherished grandmother of Maureen, Patrick, Christopher, Regina, Richard M. Jr., Renee, Michael, Daniel M., Robert Jr., Rachel, Ashley, and CJ. Loving great-grandmother of Mariah, Michael, Carolann, Patrick Jr., Aiden, Katie, Mollie, Alice, Ruby, and Lianna. Dear sister of Virginia Anello and her husband, Anthony, Cathy Breck and her husband Russ, George Armstrong and his wife, Monica, and the late Mildred and Paul Cogan. Doris is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
She leaves a legacy of faith, love, and devotion to family.
