Diversity in the Community: Galapagos Puppets & Jimmy Zhao Chinese Music Ensemble Present The Ice River: A Journey to the West

North Shore Premier — Sunday, January 11, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. | Temple Emmanuel of Wakefield

WAKEFIELD, MA — Temple Emmanuel of Wakefield will host a special cultural arts event, Diversity in the Community, featuring the North Shore premier of “The Ice River: A Journey to the West” performed by Galapagos Puppets with live accompaniment by the Jimmy Zhao Chinese Music Ensemble. The performance will take place on Sunday, January 11, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. on the fully accessible first floor of Temple Emmanuel, located at 120 Chestnut Street in Wakefield.

Designed for audiences ages 5 to 95, this vivid retelling of the classic Chinese legend follows Monk Tang and his companions — Monkey, Pig, and Sha-jing — as they journey across the Ice River in search of the mysterious source of a river monster’s power. Their adventure leads them beneath the waters, across the heavens, and through themes of courage, wisdom, and compassion.

Galapagos Puppets, founded by Madeline Beresford and Margaret Moody, has been bringing folk, historical, and fantasy stories to life since 1987. The duo studied traditional Chang Chung Hsi puppetry in Taiwan under Master Li Tien-lu and the I Wan Jan Traditional Hand Puppet Troupe, and they continue to honor that tradition through authentic Bu Dal Xi puppets and choreography. The Ice River marks the troupe’s third adaptation from the beloved Chinese epic Journey to the West.

The performance will be enhanced by live improvised music from Jimmy Zhao and his daughter, featuring traditional Chinese instruments including percussion, erhu, bamboo flute, and guzheng. Following the 45-minute performance, audience members are invited to participate in a hands-on puppet demonstration.

Tickets are $15 for ages 5 and up. Reservations may be made by calling or texting Liz at 781-521-3564. Cash or checks will be accepted at the door beginning at 1:30 p.m.

This program is presented by Temple Emmanuel of Wakefield in partnership with Linden Tree Concerts.
