Obituary: Harold G. Andrews, 87

November 30, 1938 – December 8, 2025

Harold Gregory “Greg” Andrews, a long-time resident of Reading, MA, passed away in the early morning of December 8th, 2025, of natural causes at the age of 87.

Greg was born in Boston MA, son of the late Halsey and Helen (Rauskolb) Andrews. He was one of four children, Halsey “Chuck” Andrews of Clinton MA, Helen “Joan” (Andrews) and her late husband Nicholas “Nick” Arloro of Wakefield MA, and the late Henry “Skip” and his wife Cheryl Andrews of Northfield VT. As a family, they enjoyed spending time at Wilson Pond, near North Monmouth, ME. Greg was a graduate of Arlington High School and received his Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical Engineering from Northeastern University in 1963. He was employed at General Radio (GenRad) for 30+ years and in his retirement worked for Complete Copier repairing copy machines until his illness.

Greg married his wife, Jill (Goldsmith) Andrews in 1963 and they raised four children together. He was most proud of his children, his son Harold “Andy” and his wife Barbara Andrews of Newport New VA, his son Stephen and his wife Barbara Andrews of Spanish Fork UT, his son Christopher and his wife Wendy Andrews of Hermon ME, his daughter Robin (Andrews) and her husband John Clydesdale of Shutesbury, MA, and was preceded by his beloved dog Ahab. He has ten grandchildren and two great granddaughters.

Greg was an immensely proud and stoic man with a sarcastic sense of humor as well as a high IQ. When anyone asked him how he was doing, he would take his pulse just to check. He would share interesting, little-known facts, he had a love for the English language and took everything literally. Sitting around the table you never knew where he would take the conversation next.

He will be remembered for his love of life, learning, God, rollercoasters, technology, movies, photography and travel. Greg visited 48 of the states as well as six other countries and visited more than 25 of our National Parks. In the early years of their marriage, he and his wife were avid skiers. Later in life he would ride his motorcycle or bicycle to work in Concord, he could often be found under a car doing repairs or teaching his children how to do their own repairs. He loved the military and was proud of all his family members that served.

The family enjoyed road trips, mountain climbing or going to the movies. He hiked all the mountains in New England higher than 4,000’ with family members, friends or with the Boy Scouts as an adult leader. Boy Scouts of America was a large part of his life, he was Scoutmaster for Troop 735 in Reading, MA. Greg organized leadership training for scouts and adult leaders from 1979 to 2013, culminating with being awarded the Silver Beaver for his many faithful years of service. He was given the nickname the “Great White Moose” during a BSA High Adventure outing in Maine when he removed his shirt to swim during a 50-mile canoe trip in 1983.

Greg and his wife enjoyed picnicking at Tanglewood while listening to the Boston Symphony. He enjoyed a nice prime rib with a great bottle of wine or hanging out in his man cave watching football with a beer. He could often be found with a Dunkin Donuts Iced Coffee and just about any tool or pocket utility knife you may need in one of his many, many, many pockets.

He wanted to live forever and he will, in everyone whose life he touched and beyond. There will be private service at a later date.
