BOSTON, MA – Commonwealth Shakespeare Company (CSC) and Steven Maler, Founding Artistic Director, are pleased to announce the cast of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” as part of their 30th Anniversary Season. The production was introduced with great success in 2024 to become part of the city’s holiday offerings, and they welcome the much-awarded local actor Will Lyman returning to his role as Ebenezer Scrooge, the curmudgeonly miser whose cold heart is thawed by a trio of mysterious spirits on one fateful Christmas Eve.

Running December 6 – 23 at the Cutler Majestic Theatre, this enchanting adaptation by award-winning writer/director Steve Wargo brings Dickens’ classic tale to vivid life. Described as “a musical feast” (The Boston Globe), it is brimming with traditional 19th-century carols arranged by Dianne Adams McDowell (A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder, Starmites). With direction by CSC Founding Artistic Director Steven Maler and musical direction by Dan Rodriguez, this “heart-filled new tradition” (WGBH) is sure to delight audiences of all ages.

The principal cast includes Neal Ferreira as Mr. Fezziwig, Will Lyman as Scrooge, Laura McHugh as Mrs. Fezziwig, Tamara Ryan as Mrs. Cratchit, Damon Singletary as Marley, Kathy St. George as Church Warden, Robert St. Lawrence as Bob Cratchit, Bobbie Steinbach as Old Joe, and Jared Troilo as Fred.  Other cast members include Stephen Caliskan, Peter DiMaggio, David L. Jiles, Jr., Tamara Ryan, Carolyn Saxon, Kyla Shimizu, Lily Segal Steven, and Hayley Travers in multiple roles. 

Set design is by NEED Designers.

Brief biographies of the principal cast members follow:

Neal Ferreira (Fezziwig/Exchange Gent 1/Ensemble) — CSC: Christmas Carol ‘24. Boston Symphony Orchestra: Die Tote Stadt, Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, Wozzeck, La bohème, Der Rosenkavalier. Boston Lyric Opera: Eurydice, Omar, Champion, Trouble in Tahiti, In the Penal Colony, The Magic Flute. Odyssey Opera: Lysistrata, Of Thee I Sing/Let ‘Em Eat Cake, The Voyage of Edgar Allan Poe, L’assedio di Calais, The Importance of Being Earnest; and numerous other music organizations in Boston. He an Assistant Professor of Voice at Berklee College of Music.

Will Lyman (Ebenezer Scrooge) — CSC: Christmas Carol; King Lear (King Lear), Hamlet (Claudius), The Tempest (Prospero), Julius Caesar (Brutus), and Carol ‘24 (Scrooge). Off Broadway: Man in Snow, The Passion of Dracula, The Novelist, The Grinding Machine. The Huntington Theatre Company: Prayer for the French Republic, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, All My Sons, Dead End. New Repertory Theatre: Long Day’s Journey into Night, Dollhouse, The Clean House, The Ice-Breaker.  Multiple other theatre, film, and television credits, including long-time narrator of public affairs program “Frontline” on PBS.

Laura McHugh (Mrs. Fezziwig/Maid/Exchange Gent 2/Ensemble) — CSC: Christmas Carol ‘24. Tulsa Opera: Into the Woods. Odyssey Opera: Of Thee I Sing/Let ‘Em Eat Cake. Opera 51: Sweeney Todd. Operatic roles include the title roles in Rusalka, Suor Angelica, and Gräfin Mariza, Mimì and Musetta in La bohème, Countess in Le nozze di Figaro, Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte, Vitellia in La clemenza di Tito, Valkyries Gerhilde and Ortlinde in Die Walküre, and multiple World Premieres. Concert credits include Beethoven Symphony No. 9 and Mozart Requiem, among others.

Damon Singletary (Marley/Ghost of Christmas Future/Ensemble) — CSC: Christmas Carol ’24 and Birdy. New Repertory Theatre: A Raisin in the Sun. The Huntington Theatre Company: Joe Turner’s Come and Gone. Lyric Stage: The Drowsy Chaperone, Sister Act, Fabulation, or The Re-Education of Undine, The Wiz, Peter and the Starcatcher, City of Angels. Umbrella Stage: Network, The Minutes, The Colored Museum, Head Over Heels, Fences. The Gold Dust Orphans: A Grinchley Christmas Carol, The Ebonic Woman. SpeakEasy Stage: Shakespeare in Love, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.

Kathy St. George (Church Warden/Straw Seller/Charwoman/Ensemble) — CSC: Christmas Carol ‘24. Broadway: Two productions of Fiddler on the Roof, including the 1991 Tony-Award Award-winning revival directed by Jerome Robbins. Off-Broadway: I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change. Five National Tours. Boston area credits include Lyric Stage: Urinetown, The Drowsy Chaperone, Gypsy, Sister Act, Follies, Light Up The Sky. SpeakEasy Stage: Once, Violet, Ruthless! The Divine Sister, Significant Other, and many other stages. She was recently honored with the 2025 Elliot Norton Award for Sustained Excellence.

Robert St. Laurence (Bob Cratchit/Ensemble) — CSC: Christmas Carol ‘24, Bard Over Broadway. Regional credits: The Hanover Theatre Repertory: Macbeth, Twelfth Night. Bobbie Steinbach (Old Joe/Overseer/Ensemble) — CSC: Christmas Carol ‘24, Richard III, Twelfth Night, Much Ado About Nothing, Romeo and Juliet.
