Community Invited to Uplifting Yom Kippur Services in Wakefield

Wakefield, MA — Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, is the most sacred day of the Jewish year. It is marked by prayer, introspection, and fasting as Jews around the world gather in synagogues to seek forgiveness and renewal. The day begins with the haunting Kol Nidrei service and culminates in the closing Neilah prayer, concluding with the sounding of the shofar.

This year, Chabad of Wakefield is inviting the community to experience the meaning and inspiration of Yom Kippur with services that are warm, accessible, and open to all, regardless of background or affiliation.

Services will be held at the Four Points by Sheraton in Wakefield, beginning with Kol Nidrei on Wednesday evening, October 1, at 6:30 pm. The prayers continue on Yom Kippur Day, Thursday, October 2, with the morning service at 9:30 am.

Families are encouraged to participate together. A special children’s and family program will run from 10:30 to 11:00 am, designed to engage children with the spirit of the day through stories, songs, and hands-on activities. Parents may join their children in this program or remain in the main service — whichever feels right for their family.

The traditional Yizkor Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am, giving participants the opportunity to honor the memory of loved ones in a meaningful and heartfelt setting.

The solemn day will conclude with the moving Neilah closing prayer and a communal break-fast on Thursday evening at 6:00 pm, bringing the community together in unity and celebration after the fast.

“Yom Kippur belongs to every Jew,” said Rabbi Sruly Brook, who together with his wife Devora directs Chabad of Wakefield. “Our services are warm, explanatory, and participatory — a chance to connect, reflect, and be uplifted on this most sacred day.”

There is no cost to attend, and all are welcome. Advance RSVP is appreciated for the family program to ensure proper accommodations.
